   Squares and Parks

Today a beautiful square decorated by impressive palaces and located only a few steps away from the Seine , the Place de la Concorde was once known as the Place de la Revolution. There is where the guillotine was placed during the French Revolution. From the square that in the seventeen hundreds witnessed the beheading of 1343 people including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, we would like to point out to you the 3,300 year-old Luxor Obelisk, offered to the French government as a gift by Egypt in the eighteen hundreds, and the fountain.

A few meters away from the Place de la Concorde, the Place Vendome, is worth visiting either to appreciate the harmony of the buildings that surround it or to experience its particularly elegant environment where famous jewelleries and hotels are located.

Paris ' oldest square and probably also the dearest to Parisians is the Place des Vosges , located in the zone of Marais. The square was born in the sixteen hundreds as a royal square, and then transformed into an important commercial centre, the square is today a lively meeting point for locals and tourists that can relax at its gardens or visit one of the many shops that surround it.

Located to the right of the Seine , the Place Du Chatelet is undoubtedly the liveliest from a cultural viewpoint. On this square, there are two famous theatres that feature avant-garde theatre plays, opera and ballet.

An absolute must-see landmark, the Place the Charles de Grulle, also known as the Place de l'Etoile is where the Arc de Triomphe, one of the most striking monuments of the city, is located. Erected by Napoleon to celebrate French victories, this arch offers a beautiful view of the city from the top.

Given that the large green areas are far away from the city, for Parisians and visitors, the most frequented parks are the numerous enchanting "jardins."

Splendidly located by the Seine between the Place de la Concorde and the Musée du Louvre, this garden is the largest of the city. Great for promenades and moments of relaxation, the "Jardin del Tuileries" is an added attraction to those who visit the temporary exhibits featured at the pavilion inside the garden: the "Jeu de Paume."

Jardins des Champs Elysées

These gardens are the starting point to the discovery of the Champs Elysées, the most famous street in Paris . Separated from the Tuleries by the Place de la Concorde, the gardens contains restaurants, theatres and important buildings.

Jardin du Luxembourg

Dominated by the Palace that carries the same name and houses the French Senate, this is the small green lung of the Rive Gauche. The garden was open to the public in the eighteen hundreds, and it is filled with statues and attractions for people of all ages.

Jardin des Plantes and Parc Monceau

Dedicated to those who love botany, the suggestive Jardin des Plantes houses in its interior the Museum of Natural History . The refined Parc Monceau located in the north west of the city and that once upon a time surprised its visitors with picturesque artistic encounters, now delights them with elegant forms and rare plants.

Finally, we would like to point out those that for its size are the largest parks of Paris : The Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes. These are vast green areas formerly used as hunting woods by the nobility. The Bois de Boulogne is about 850 hectares in size and is located to the west of Paris . It offers attractions for adults (2 hippodromes) as well as for children. The Bois de Vincennes offers great promenades around a lovely lake, an interesting zoo and a small castle.
