History:

The first Parisian settlement dates back to the III century B.C. and was founded by a tribe of Celtic Gales that settled at the current Ile de la Citè. In 508 A.D, the city -that was for a period of time under the domination of the Roman Empire, is conquered by the Francs who made Paris the capital of their Kingdom. After a lively and blossoming Middle Age, Paris is occupied several times by England , which takes over the city during the Hundred Years War (1337 - 1453). The Parisian fifteen hundreds witness not only an impressive artistic growth, but also a religious war between Roman Catholics and Protestants. The next century experiences the rise of the "Sun King," the egocentric Louis XIV that thought so high of himself that he repeatedly said "I am the State". He is responsible for the construction of the magnificent Palace of Versailles . The king Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette were thrown out of power during the turbulent French Revolution that started on July the 14 th 1789 , the day when the Parisians successfully take the infamous state prison La Bastille. After the proclamation of the First Republic and the Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte, another Louis -Louis XVII, is once again enthroned. In 1848 a new revolutions brings about the Second Republic that becomes after just a few years the Second Empire . The Third Republic is born as a government in charge of the national defence against the Germans after a devastating defeat. The nineteen hundreds is a period of great artistic vivacity until World War II. Paris is occupied by the Nazis in 1940 and in 1944 allies and French troops liberate it. After a little over twenty years, the city is once again the headquarters of the innovative movement of 1968. It was actually a group of students from the Sorbonne that led this revolution that expanded over the entire continent.

Introduction :

Capital of France and of the French region Ile-de-France , Paris is an incredibly rich metropolis with regards to art and history. Indeed, every corner of Paris -capital of one of the oldest nation-states in the world, has a fascinating story to tell. Located along the Placid Seine River , it is delightful to get lost while discovering how the unquenchable thirst for greatness of older kings crowded the city with splendid squares and palaces built by some of the most famous architects and artists that ever lived. But it is the collection of the 20 Arrondissements (Districts) that compose the city that makes Paris what it is today: a metropolis in constant change that offers to the international tourist contrasting environments such as the monumental Avenue of the Champs Elysées and the intimate little squares of Montmartre, or the typically French H ô tel de Marais and the multi-ethnical Belleville Street.

The reputation of the city as one of the most famous cultural centres and as a place that welcomes new ideas is meritorious and valued by intellectuals and artists that have lived and worked in Paris . It is enough to visit the crowded Parisian cemeteries to discover that the French capital has indeed hosted some of the most famous thinkers and artists of all times. The fame of the city as a centre of performing arts and entertainment is also indisputable. A night in Paris offers something for literally everyone!
