  Musei

A real "city-museum" for the incredible number of monuments spread throughout the entire historic centre, Paris is also one of the most important capitals of universal art. The guardian of the most famous works of art is the Musée du Louvre, a Parisian symbol known in the entire world. However, those tourists who really appreciate art cannot miss the more recent but equally significant exhibit of the Musée d'Orsay, and Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou (Beaubourg). There are many more museums that attract lots of visitors as well and many of them are located in the Marais quarter.

Musée du Louvre - Palais du Louvre (1° Arr.)

The largest building of the entire city houses the Musée du Louvre that features a collection of such magnitude that it is impossible to visit in only one day. The huge complex, located right in front of the Seine , is the former home of the French royal family and has been remodelled in several occasions. It was finally turned into a museum by Napoleon I. The museum offers a vast collection with sections dedicated exclusively to European paintings and sculptures (French, Italian, Spanish, Flemish and German), to ancient times (oriental, Etruscan, Roman, Greek and Egyptian), and to numerous works of art including the jewellery of the French Crown. If you do not have time to visit the entire museum, we recommend some works of art that every visitor should see: Among the Italian paintings do not miss the "Giaconda" and the "Virgin of the Rocks" both by Leonardo Da Vinci, while from ancient art we would like to pint out the "Venus de Milo" and the " Nike of Samothrace." From oriental antique art, make sure to see the "Code of Hammurabi", the first body of law engraved on a basalt stone.

Musée d'Orsay - 62, Rue de Lille (7° Arr.)

This popular museum is less than 20 years old and is located in a former Orsay train station. This museum has brought together impressionist, realists and art nouveau works of art once displayed at the Louvre, the Jeu de Puame, and other Parisian museums. Among the featured artists we would like to highlight Monet, Gauguin, Matisse and Rodin. The most famous pieces in the museum are “The Card Player” by Cezanne, and Renoir’s “Ball at the Moulin de la Galette.”

Centre National d'Arte de Culture Georges Pompidou (Beaubourg) Rue Rambetau/Rue St Martin (4° Arr.)

Innaugurated in 1977, the Centre Pompidou has given a lot to talk about because of its unique design that was created by a prestigious pool of architects. From the outside the visitors could see pipes, elevators and stairs that were placed outside to maximize the interior space. The museum attracts a large public interested in all aspects of contemporary art. Indeed, the Beaubourg houses a museum of Modern Art , a movie theatre, a library, a space for theatre and dance and the interesting reconstruction of the Atelier Brancusi.

Musée Carnavalet - 23, Rue de Sévigne (3° Arr.)
